Digital photographs and stored documents are capturing our lives in increasing detail, making our pasts more accessible than ever before – and not just to us: Search engines remember everything we’ve ever searched for. Long forgotten images and clues to our lives that were put online once upon a time can be brought into the present by authorities and HR managers at the click of a mouse.
At one time, forgetting was normal and remembering, storing and passing on information was expensive and therefore limited. In the digital age this relationship has now reversed. We’re moving ever closer towards a society that remembers everything. But what does this mean for our conception of ourselves and for society as a whole?
